Sunderland charity looking for people to walk over hot coals in attempt to break World Record

A charity based in Sunderland is asking people to walk over hot coals as it attempts to break a World Record.

Sergio Petrucci, the founder of the Red Sky Foundation, is hoping to get more than 1,300 people walking over hot coals to break a world record firewalk.

The heart charity is teaming up with the Charlie Gard Foundation which supports families and individuals affected by mitochondrial disease.

Currently, the record stands at 1,360 people but the charities are hoping to smash that while raising thousands of pounds for charity.

Participants will walk across a strip of red-hot embers measuring up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and will be given an in-depth training session led by a team of professionals at UK Firewalk.

Everyone who enters can be sponsored to raise money for the Red Sky Foundation or a cause that is particularly important to them and will also get a medal and a certificate.

Sergio said: "I have done it before and it feels just like getting off the sunbed on holiday and walking on the hot floor! It's very much mind over matter.

"It shows anything is possible if you put your mind to it. We only set it up the other day but I'm hoping it takes off.

"The reason we're doing it is because of the saying: 'Would you walk over hot coals for someone?' If you know someone who has been affected by heart disease then it's a great thing to get involved with.

"Even if you don't, it's a great experience and you will be helping others.

"You can do it as an individual or group and everyone will get a training session before they start."

Sergio and Emma Petrucci were inspired to set up the Sunderland -based charity Red Sky Foundation after their daughter’s life was saved by doctors in 2015.

As well as raising money for defibrillators, the charity also raises awareness of CPR and often goes into schools to teach engaging lessons with children.

The fire-walkers will meet at Rainton Meadows Arena to take part in their training and all participants must go through a motivational psychology fear buster seminar.

It is designed to equip you with the resources to walk unharmed across 20ft of wood embers burning at 1236 degrees Fahrenheit.

The event is being organised by Change and is being held at the Rainton Arena on Saturday, May 14, 2022.
