Sunderland board sent clear message from fans on who they want as new manager

The Sunderland board have been sent a clear message from fans who they wants as new manager of the club.

The Black Cats are looking for their third manager in just over a year after Lee Johnson was somewhat controversially sacked last weekend following a 6-0 loss away at Bolton.

It's been a strong season for Sunderland so far, but the board felt a decision had to be made after the embarrassing defeat.

The former Bristol City manager had only been in the post for almost 14 months after replacing Phil Parkinson in December 2020.

Former Everton interim boss Duncan Ferguson had been the early favourite, however he has now been ruled out after it was confirmed that he'll remain at the club to work with Frank Lampard.

And whilst other candidates such as Alex Neil and Grant McCann have been named, a favourite amongst fans has clearly emerged.

Over 50 per cent of fans have said that Roy Keane is their pick for the job.

The Chronicle understands that Keane is Sunderland's number one choice, with an interview to take place.

The former boss is said to be interested in returning to the club where he began his managerial career back in 2006, with the figures suggesting that he would be welcomed with open arms.

The current Sky Sports pundit remains a popular figure on Wearside despite resigning from his post first time round in December 2008.

The Black Cats remain in a great spot in League One in third place, just two points off the automatic promotion places.
