Sunday with Myleene Klass: ‘I’m a sucker for carols’

Sundays growing up? My mum is Filipino so we were brought up Filipino Catholic. She was the church reader. My brother was an altar boy. My sister was in the choir. Dad would do the offering – and I was the church organist.

Favourite hymn? I’m a sucker for carols. You can pull out all the stops for O Come, All Ye Faithful or Hark the Herald Angels Sing. My father was a captain in the Royal Navy, so any hymns about the sea I would play loud – up until the day that I got fired.

Fired for what? I was 16, eating Refreshers, larking around with my friend who was sitting with me under the pretext of being my page turner. I dropped a sweet between the keys and the resounding oomph of the bass wouldn’t stop. I was excommunicated.

Sundays now? I don’t take my children to church. We’re fallen Catholics. My week is full throttle – one daughter is at music college, the other plays netball and my son plays football. Sundays I try to make a day of rest.

Sunday grub? We always have an open door. Everybody shows up with their families from many different cultures, which I adore. We’ll have a massive roast or a barbecue. My partner does the cooking. If he didn’t, we’d all starve.

Are you a bad cook? I don’t understand the alchemy. This upsets every Filipino auntie. Rice, however– like any good Asian girl, I’m an expert. I didn’t want the job of cooking the rice in the jungle in I’m a Celeb, but no one else could.

Sunday evening? I make sure my children have a little bit of me because they’ve got such different needs. I’ll do a box set with my middle daughter, like Stranger Things. I met Millie Bobby Brown on holiday before I’d watched it and though she knew me from the jungle, I had no idea who she was!
