The Rams-49ers matchup on Sunday will be a historic one as soon as the ball is snapped. It will be the first time in NFL history that a quarterback taken with the first pick of the NFL draft will face off against a quarterback taken with the last pick of the NFL draft, according to the NFL’s research department.
Rams signal-caller Matthew Stafford was drafted No. 1 by the Lions in 2009 out of Georgia. Meanwhile, San Francisco’s Brock Purdy was selected with the No. 262 pick in the 2022 draft from Iowa State. You couldn’t ask for two players with more different starts to their NFL careers.

Stafford has spent the last 14 years as one of the league’s bigger names, winning his first Super Bowl with Los Angeles less than two years ago. Meanwhile, Purdy is one of the newest faces in the NFL and has gotten off to an incredible start to his career, leading his team to an NFC championship game in his first year after taking over the starting spot during the 2022 season.
Now, they both find themselves trying to win the dreaded NFC West and their first matchup of the season is slated for Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET on Fox.
