Diving team to search loch for Scots newlywed who vanished 28 years ago

An expert diving team using specialist sonar equipment will launch a new search for a newlywed who went missing almost 28 years ago. Joiner Kevin McGuire disappeared on Hogmanay 1994 from his remote cottage home in Stronachlachar, near Callander, Perthshire.

The 27-year-old, who was from Glasgow, got into his distinctive green car after a disagreement with wife Lisa and was never seen again. Despite police searches of nearby lochs and attempts to discover if Kevin had started a new life, his disappearance remains one of Scotland’s most baffling and longest-running missing persons cases.

Now, underwater search and recovery team Beneath The Surface, from Chorley in Lancashire, have offered their services free to help the McGuire family. Set up last year, they have already been successful in locating the bodies of two missing persons in Workington, Cumbria.

Founder member Phil Jones, 34, read about Kevin’s disappearance in the Sunday Mail and spoke to the McGuire family last week. They then accepted his offer of help. Phil said: “The fact Kevin was last seen in a car and may have gone into water gives us hope that we can find the vehicle and locate him.

“We want to do whatever we can to help people find their missing loved ones and help bring them some peace and closure.” The seven-strong team carry out searches using state-of-the-art sonar equipment which can scan up to 50 metres under water."

Baby girl tragically died after mum passed out on top of her while under influence of alcohol

A baby died after her mum passed out on top of her while under the influence of alcohol. Claire Ross, 39, had suffered from extreme mental illness which only worsened her crippling alcohol addiction, a court heard.

Ross' first baby had already sadly died, but her case failed to be referred to social services until the same thing happened to another one of her children.

The double tragedy happened shortly after she moved from Merseyside to Nyon, Switzerland, in 2018. However, her alcoholism had already caused issues before she moved, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The year before, her eldest daughter, aged three, was put at severe risk when Ross drove down the M62 while four and a half times over the legal limit.

The incident took place just two miles from Ibrox stadium, where Rangers are playing Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon.

Senior SNP politician accused of groping teenager in sex attack at boozy flat party

North Lanarkshire SNP leader Jordan Linden (Dominic Cocozza/Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser)

A senior SNP politician is at the centre of claims he groped a teenager at a boozy party. Jordan Linden was promoted to a £45,000 council leader job and had ambitions to be an MP yet was the focus of complaints to party bosses about his behaviour.

The Sunday Mail can reveal that the 27-year-old is accused of making unwanted advances towards a teenager at a flat in Dundee after a Pride event in the city. Three sources have outlined details of allegations that Linden groped and sexually harassed the young man while the pair were in a room together and described the SNP councillor as being “very drunk”.

Just two months ago he was announced as leader of North Lanarkshire Council following May’s elections. SNP bosses are now under fire to explain why Linden, a former chairman of the Scottish Youth Parliament, was promoted while complaints about the incident to party chiefs were ignored.

Linden was nominated for selection to be a candidate in the Westminster election but, four days after the alleged incident in 2019, he announced publicly he would not be standing. At the time he said he wanted to “re-focus on my important work locally in council and on my own health and wellbeing” but several sources have claimed the decision related to the complaint.

Refugees from Ukraine brought to Glasgow under a Scottish Government scheme said they have been made very welcome but are uncertain of their future weeks after arriving.

Many refugees are yet to be placed in permanent accommodation and are now waiting in hotels across the country.

More than 250 Ukrainian refugees who fled the Russian war on Ukraine are living at the Holiday Inn Express, based at Glasgow airport, unsure of where they are going to end up.

Some of the refugees say they have been given homes, while others have been placed with Scottish families. The majority of the group remain at the hotel.

They said they are ‘extremely grateful’ for the warm Scottish welcome they have received and are enjoying day trips which have been set up to help them explore the country.
