The CEO of the Sugar Bowl, Jeff Hundley, announced on Wednesday that the highly anticipated game scheduled for that evening will be postponed to Thursday due to the recent fatal New Year's attack in New Orleans. Hundley emphasized that the decision to delay the game by 24 hours was made in the best interests of public safety.
The annual college football event, which attracts fans from across the country, was set to feature a matchup between the University of Georgia and the University of Notre Dame. The winner of this year's Sugar Bowl would have advanced to the College Football Playoff semifinals.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick assured the public that law enforcement officials have a comprehensive safety plan in place for the rescheduled game. The plan includes the deployment of officers in and around the vicinity of Ceasar's Superdome, the venue for the Sugar Bowl. These officers will be conducting thorough searches for any suspicious items to ensure the safety of attendees.
In addition to the increased police presence, bomb-sniffing dogs will be stationed around the perimeter of the Superdome area. The entire area will be on lockdown throughout Thursday's game to maintain a secure environment for all participants and spectators.
