Wednesday's Sugar Bowl game between Georgia and Notre Dame was postponed following the deadly attack in New Orleans, which claimed the lives of at least 10 people. The decision to postpone the game was made in the best interest of public safety, according to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey.
Sankey stated, 'The decision to postpone tonight's Sugar Bowl was made in the best interest of public safety. Lives were tragically lost last night, and we are appreciative that public officials and law enforcement agencies continue to work with great diligence to ensure the safety of the New Orleans community.'
The University of Notre Dame, along with President Robert A. Dowd, released a statement expressing prayers for the safety of those impacted by the tragic events.
University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead also issued a statement following the incident. The FBI is currently investigating the suspect's potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations after an ISIS flag was found in the truck. Weapons and a potential IED were discovered inside the suspect's vehicle, with additional potential IEDs located in the French Quarter.
Following the decision to postpone the game, reactions from college football fans and pundits on social media were mixed. While some fans supported the decision, others expressed outrage over the postponement.
