Sugar Bowl delayed due to tragic attack

The 2025 Sugar Bowl between the No. 2 seed Georgia Bulldogs and No. 7 seed Notre Dame has been delayed following a tragic terrorist attack on Bourbon Street that left over 30 people injured and claimed 10 lives.

The College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup between Georgia and Notre Dame has been rescheduled for Thursday at 4:00 p.m. ET (televised on ESPN).

“The site of tonight’s (now Jan. 2) Sugar Bowl game is undergoing a full security review following the fatal overnight attack on Bourbon Street. Officials are conducting a full sweep of the Superdome to make sure there are no security breaches before, during or after the game,” said Steve Gardner of USA TODAY.

Initially, multiple reports on Wednesday suggested the game would proceed as planned under enhanced security protocols. Now, Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley has come out to say the game will be delayed to ensure fan safety.

Now with the delay the only games happening on Jan. 1 are No. 5 seed Texas versus No. 4 seed Arizona State in the early slate. In the afternoon, the highly anticipated Big Ten matchup between the No.1 seed Oregon Ducks and No. 8 seed Ohio State Buckeyes.
