Sue Perkins, Nish Kumar, Sara Pascoe and Ed Gamble to take part in live Dungeons & Dragons game for Comic Relief

Comedians Sue Perkins, Nish Kumar, Sara Pascoe and Ed Gamble will take part in a live game of Dungeons & Dragons to raise money with Comic Relief.

The choose-your-adventure role-playing game will see the comedians embark on a fantasy quest, kicking off live at 7pm on Friday May 8.

Led by Dungeon Master Paul Foxcroft, who hosts regular live Dungeons & Dragons comedy night Questing Time in London, they will take on the roles of wizards and other magical beings, taking on challenges and earning rewards. (We’re hoping costumes will be involved.)

For a donation, viewers will be able to vote on the fate of the comedians, including which will fall victim to a curse, what sort of monster they will battle and which magic item they will have to help on their quest. For example, you can choose whether they will be attacked by “an evil horse. But really evil. Also it's a vampire”, “a gargantuan crab with a knife and an attitude” or “a great white shark that's also a wizard”.

Comic Relief has teamed up with Dungeons & Dragons creators Wizards of the Coast to support charities on the frontlines of the pandemic. All proceeds will go to help vulnerable people affected by the coronavirus pandemic, both in the UK and around the world.

Head to tiltify.com to donate and vote in the polls.

How Dungeons and Dragons works

By Jack Webb, tech and gaming writer

Dungeons and Dragons let you role-play out a fantastic adventure in real life.

First of all, you need to create your character from scratch, which includes fleshing out their backstory, their starting class (of which there are 13) and the driving force behind your character's motivation.

Typically, your adventure will be loosely based around a start and endpoint to set the scene, so everything you do in between is up to you, and your Dungeon Master - the one who dictates and narrates the story - will have to react on the fly to your snap decision and find a way to incorporate the story based off your choices in the game.

Combat in the game plays out through a series of special D dice, which you use to make rolls. These dice rolls dictate how effective your actions are in everything you do, like who goes first in combat, with higher numbers always being favoured.

Campaigns can last weeks and sometimes years as their characters continue to survive and keep questing.
