Sue Gray report: Shocking email warning staff not to wave bottles around as party started just after press conference

A truly astonishing email has emerged revealing a senior worker warning staff that a press conference was finishing around the same time a bash was starting.

In the email, workers were told not to 'wave bottles around' as cameras would be in the building for the briefing that was taking place to urge the country to follow strict Covid lockdown rules.

In light of the Sue Gray report about the booze-filled garden party, Boris Johnson said he "takes full responsibility" that took place at No.10 Downing Street in May 2020.

The party was starting at a similar time to a national press conference finishing. During this briefing, people were urged to follow strict lockdown rules, which included only being allowed to meet one person from outside of your household for exercise. At work, staff members had to maintain 2m social distancing.

The e-mail inviting people to the 20 May 2020 ‘bring your own booze’ garden party at No10 went to 200 staff - not 100 as previously reported.

And a No10 special advisor messaged top aide Martin Reynolds beforehand saying: “Just to flag that the press conference will probably be finishing around that time.

"So helpful if people can be mindful of that as speakers and cameras are leaving, not walking around waving bottles of wine etc.”

On 13 May 2020 some restrictions were relaxed to allow meetings outdoors for exercise or recreation with one person from another household. Guidance encouraged those who could not work from home to go back to work. At work, social distancing guidance applied, places required to maintain 2m social distancing wherever possible, including while arriving at and departing from work.

Today (Wednesday, May 25), Boris Johnson has addressed the 37 pages verdict by saying: "I hope that we will be able to move on and focus on the priority of the British people."

"That is the mission of the whole of the government and we will work day and night to make it happen", he concluded.
