Sudan's army chief Burhan rules out negotiations with RSF after drone strike

EYE ON AFRICA © FRANCE 24

Sudan's army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan struck a defiant tone on Wednesday after a drone hit an army base he was visiting in eastern Sudan, casting doubt on recent efforts to bring an end to the country's 15-month civil war. The attack took place at a graduation ceremony at the Gibeit army base, killing five people.

Also, a court in Guinea has sentenced a former junta leader and dictator to 20 years in prison. Moussa Dadis Camara and some of his top aides were found guilty of crimes against humanity for mass murder and rapes committed during and after a pro-democracy protest in 2009.

Finally, the UN has welcomed a ceasefire agreement between DR Congo and Rwanda. The deal over a resurgence of conflict in the eastern Congolese region of North Kivu was reached in Luanda by a meeting hosted by Angola. M23 rebels backed by Kigali have been terrorising communities and battling Congolese forces since late 2021. This week's ceasefire comes ahead of the August 3 expiration of a humanitarian truce between the M23 and government forces.
