Succession’s Connor Roy singing Leonard Cohen at Maru Karaoke Lounge will break your heart

Warning: DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED EPISODE 2 OF SUCCESSION SEASON 4.

Ready?

Ok.

Welcome to our Succession Power Rankings! Each week of the show’s ten-episode final season, For The Win will chat about the latest episode to see how everyone in the Succession universe is doing. Let’s dig into it.

We should immediately address the most memorable moment from this episode: Connor Roy, played by Alan Ruck, ends up singing “Famous Blue Rain Coat” by Leonard Cohen at Maru Karaoke Lounge in Koreatown.

This was a shockingly big week for Leonard Cohen references. The indie rock supergroup boygenius has an entire track dedicated to the singer on their new album. Lana Del Rey refers to the late songwriter on her new song “Kitsugi” as well.

Connor Roy, who said he had only seen karaoke done in movies, performs a rendition of “Famous Blue Rain Coat” that none of his half-siblings want to hear even for a millisecond.

But it immediately became a highlight of the new season.

Here is what else is happening:

Connor Roy found himself in a situation I would not wish upon my worst enemy.

The night before his wedding, his fiancé ran away from the rehearsal dinner and as a coping mechanism, he chose to try karaoke for the first time and he sings the depressing-as-heck “Famous Blue Rain Coat” by Leonard Cohen.

(For what it is worth: His other option was “Desperado” by The Eagles and that would not have been a much better choice.)

He also spoke bluntly about his superpower of not needing love and not caring whether or not his spouse-to-be loved him — while also constantly checking her iPhone location.

It’s usually not a great sign when you flee your wedding rehearsal dinner after saying “I can’t do this!” during your speech. Willa went on a soul-searching journey in which she somehow ended up at an aquarium supply store, then the dry cleaners, and then maybe Williamsburg in Brooklyn before finding her way back home.

While it seemed like she was in a good position of power as Logan Roy’s “assistant” at Waystar Royco. but we learned that she actually wants to be a news anchor. Unfortunately, her audition tape is a total train wreck.

Greg somehow becomes the person who delivers the news that Kerry’s audition tape isn’t going to work out, but she sees right through his lies and threatens to tear him apart like a piece of human string cheese. Ouch!

Gerri Kellman

Gerri is a bit of a non-factor so far this season, but sometimes, it’s better to play the middle and not take losses than to get caught with egg on your face.

Siobhan Roy

Shiv gets boxed out by Tom when she is trying to find a divorce lawyer and the face she makes when she realizes what is happening is, well, not so great. She doesn’t seem like she is doing well.

5
Kendall Roy

Kendall is using tons of Buddhist quotes and even has a genuine smile and laugh in this episode. But we’re still seeing him trauma dump in front of his father and we’re getting Sad Charlie Brown walks, too.

Lukas Matsson

We haven’t seen Lukas Matsson yet aside from a FaceTime call with Kendall, but he could potentially lose out on acquiring Waystar Royco. Lukas has a big meeting scheduled with Logan that we will see during the next episode, though, and he needs this deal to not fall apart.

Tom Wambsgans

Tom Wambsgans continues to make me laugh more than any other character on this show. His speech introducing Logan on the news floor at ATN is fully perfect and I have no notes.

2
Roman Roy

Roman told a random lady that he will set aside several hundred thousand dollars dedicated to destroying and later admits that he was “annoying” when he was a kid.

He also tells his siblings that he is the John Lennon of the family before later betraying their trust and having a private meeting with their father, in which he hears that he is more than “wanted” at ATN but instead needed.

Suddenly, it seems that Roman has all the power. He can align himself with his dad or he can stick with his siblings for their expensive PGM acquisition. Either way, the other side will have devastating consequences. What a power play!

Logan Roy

Logan was seen casually wearing sunglasses inside as if “Santa Claus was a hitman” or if everyone worked for the shark in Jaws before giving his company a terrifying yet inspiring speech.

He also apologizes to his children while admitting he wishes that were at his birthday party, which is seemingly enough to convince Roman to potentially align himself with ATN.
