'Stylish' new Nottinghamshire cocktail bar planned for 'heart of town centre'

Plans for a "stylish" new cocktail bar in the heart of Hucknall shopping centre have been put forward. The application looks to form the micro-bar in place of a former shop in High Street, Hucknall.

The purpose of the bar, the applicant wrote, would be to act as a "mini hub" that would bring the local community together. Concerns over the "demise of several pubs" in Hucknall was also cited as a factor behind the planned development.

The ground floor of the premises would be converted into the bar area. There are no tenants currently occupying the top floor living space.

Opening hours would be from 12pm-10pm from Sunday to Thursday, and 12pm-11-pm on Fridays, Saturdays and bank holidays - including Christmas Eve and New Year's Day. The premises is located within a cluster of twelve, three storey units on the south side of the High Street.

In a planning application issued to Ashfield District Council, a design and access statement notes that a lot of the familiar pubs in Hucknall have gone. The statement reads: "The town's dynamics for socializing has certainly changed over the years.

"Historically, the town has always been a place offering patrons numerous venues to drink and socialize. Sadly, many of the familiar pubs and bars have gone.

"Either demolished to make way for shops or such like or converted into HMOs. To survive in the current economic climate, the remaining pubs and bars within the town centre and its outskirts have had no choice but to change with the times.

"The younger generation do not seem to value the older social values of going out to the pub and this in itself reduces the number of patrons within the town. On the plus side, this has resulted in less anti-social behaviour within the town."

A decision is set to be made by May 5.
