STV reveals record viewing figures for Euro 2024 opening match

STV has said it set the record for the highest ever opening game audience across a Euro competition on any channel after last night’s Scotland v Germany game.

The broadcaster said it reached 1.79 million viewers and scored a peak audience of 1.3m.

This meant it was the channel’s best watched programme of 2024 and also the biggest audience for any channel in Scotland so far this year.

On STV Player meanwhile, there were 524 000 streams, making it the streamer’s highest ever match – compared with 494 000 for England v Denmark at Euro 2020.

Things didn’t go Scotland’s way on Friday night as they suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to the hosts.

Steve Clarke’s side found themselves 2-0 down inside 20 minutes and things went from bad to worse when Ryan Porteous was sent off just before half time.

MD of broadcast at STV Bobby Hain said: “We’re thrilled to have delivered exclusive coverage of the first match of the Uefa Euros 2024 between Scotland and hosts Germany.

“Scotland is a nation of proud football fans and the incredible ratings for both the channel and STV Player are testament to that.

“With loads of live matches live on STV, we’re hugely excited about a month of top-flight football coming up for fans.”

Scotland’s next game will come on Wednesday, June 19 when they take on Switzerland before the final group-stage match against Hungary on June 23.
