Sturgill Simpson’s surprise Righteous Gemstones song has everyone singing about gold in California

WARNING: LIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE THIRD SEASON OF THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES SERIES.

After yet another entertaining season, HBO’s latest offering of The Righteous Gemstones, has reached the doorstep of a season finale. But before we can sort out what happens next with our favorite bumbling/grifting evangelical family, Grammy-winning country singer Sturgill Simpson finally sang a song for us during the de facto penultimate episode.

Those familiar with country music had been wondering when Simpson — first clearly introduced as Brother Marshall in the first episode — would actually sing.

Danny McBride and Co. managed to keep Simpson’s talents holstered for a delightful cover of “All The Gold in California” by Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers Band. It was the perfect way to prepare us for season finale mode.

Naturally, Simpson’s singing was all anyone watching The Righteous Gemstones could talk about on Twitter. Oh, by the way: It’s on Spotify now!
