Spectacular vintage photographs show how Tower Bridge has endured over the years as its surroundings on the River Thames and its banks have changed through time.

The historic black and white pictures give a glimpse of the landmark as the area underwent incredible transformations after the bridge’s construction in 1894.

The enormous feat of engineering is captured from all different angles, from the view from the upper level to its engine room and the famous drawbridge lifting up and down.

The bridge was constructed in the early 1890s and one image shows the structural framework as it was being built.

Another fascinating photo shows fleets of rowing boats, sailing boats and steam boats floating around the castle-like edifice during its opening ceremony in June 1894, with the Prince of Wales - the future King Edward VII - in attendance.

Holidaymakers can also be seen basking on the beach under the shadow of the bridge in 1936.

As well as Londoners enjoying the view, one image shows how the bridge survived the destruction of the Blitz as smoke billows from fires raging through the Surrey docks during World War Two.

Tower Bridge has captivated the imagination of filmmakers and artists through the ages and actor Michael Caine was pictured with Shelley Winters on the bridge in the 1966 film Alfie.

The world-famous landmark was used as an emblem for the London Olympic Games in 2012 including a stunning fireworks display launched from the bridge and broadcast across the globe.

Among photos showing its historical significance, another photo shows Tower Bridge as an everyday backdrop for modern-day commuters traversing the Thames.
