A Leeds bar is in the running to win a prestigious national award.
The Maven, in Call Lane, has enjoyed regional praise and is now in for the National Pub & Bar of the Year honour. The awards aim to showcase the hospitality industry’s diversity, creativity and vital importance to the UK economy.
The Maven was the first secret cocktail bar to open in Leeds. Its doorway is unmarked and when you gain entry you wander up the stairs to be met by a distinctive ‘M’.

It is a popular venue in our city and we’ve previously featured it in a round of the best speakeasies in Leeds. It is now in the running for the top honour in the National Pub & Bar of the Year.
Those competing will be going head-to-head at an event being held on Wednesday, June 22. At the final, 15 regional winners will also be announced, as well as the overall National Pub & Bar of the Year.
“Just from being out in these venues, you can see how much pubs and bars mean to people across the UK,” said Tristan O’Hana, editor of Pub & Bar magazine, which hosts the event. “With visitor numbers increasing, it’s more important than ever for operators to deliver a standout service during every visit – no matter the business in question.”
Other Yorkshire businesses nominated include The Punch Bowl, in Marton-cum-Grafton, Firepit, in Beverley, and Public, in Sheffield.
We wish those regional businesses in the running for the overall honour the best of luck. You can find out all the last food and drink news from around our city by visiting our Best in Leeds homepage.
