Stunning Highland location makes list of the 50 best beaches in the WORLD

A STUNNING Highlands location that looks like a “tropical paradise” has been shortlisted among the 50 best beaches in the world.

Achmelvich, located three miles north of Lochinver along the North Coast 500, is known for its white sands and clear turquoise waters.

It’s a popular destination for accommodation among those doing the journey, with camping, glamping and caravanning spots available.

According to The World’s Best Beaches, a site which brings together influencers, journalists and travel agents to judge the coastal locations, Achmelvich has been ranked at number 45 – beating competitors from Cuba, Turkey and even the Bahamas.

In terms of its level of untouched nature, the site scored the area eight out of 10. Its score for swimming was seven out of 10, and its total number of annual sunny days was 182.

However, it’s possible that the average annual temperature of 7.8 degrees could be to blame for the positioning of the beach in the top 50.

Explaining the reason for the beach featuring on the shortlist, the organisers stated: “Who knew Scotland had beaches resembling a tropical paradise with bright sand and water so clear and turquoise that you’ll mistake it for the Caribbean?

“This is a popular spot for windsurfers, kayakers, and water skiers, but with a great campsite nearby, it is truly for everyone wanting to explore a nearly perfect beach in the Highlands of Scotland. Known for its natural beauty, great amenities, and excellent swimming, we highly recommend adding this stunning beach to your bucket list.”

“Achmelvich Bay is a great place to watch the sunset from the beach over the sea. A truly hidden gem in one of the most beautiful places on earth,” added travel influencer Highlands2hammocks.

The world’s best beach was Lucky Bay in southern Australia – known for its friendly resident kangaroos and an incredible 303 sunny days every single year.

Anse Source d’Argent in the Seychelles was number two, offering beautiful blue waters, family activities and 323 days of sun all year round.
