Stunned Scots teen captures mystery 'fireball' hurtling across sky on way to school

A Scots schoolgirl and her mum were left stunned when they saw a 'fireball' hurtling through the sky.

Amy Mackie had been in the car next to her mum Karen on her way to school when she saw the mystery spectacle overhead in Livingston.

The 15-year-old caught the scene on camera near the Lizzie Bryce roundabout at around 8.10am on Wednesday before it disappeared.

In the footage, a large object - that appears as if it's burning - can be seen flying through the sky.

Karen and Amy, a pupil at West Calder High School, described what they saw as a 'fireball', believing it was possibly a meteor.

The 44-year-old mum told the Daily Record : "We weren't sure what it was. It's been suggested that it was an asteroid, we didn't say that, but it was certainly a meteor or some kind of fireball."

She added: "Amy was really excited to see it and she just couldn’t believe she had managed to capture it on video."

The video was shared on social media, with some suggesting the object was just a plane.

But Karen insisted it was not and said the 'fireball' appeared as if it was flying towards the ground.

It comes as NASA warned a huge asteroid, larger than the world's tallest building, was to pass Earth this week.

The space rock, which has been named 7482 (1994 PC1), is set to travel at an immense speed of 47,344 miles per hour when it comes within 1.2 million miles away from our planet.

The asteroid was set to come at its closest distance to Earth at around 9.51pm on Tuesday.
