A recent study has shed light on the representation of female characters in the top-grossing films of 2023. The study, conducted by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University, revealed some concerning trends in the industry.
According to the findings, only 18% of the 100 highest-grossing films featured more female than male characters, with a mere 5% of films having an equal number of female and male characters. This meant that a significant 77% of movies had more male characters in speaking roles than female characters.
The study also highlighted a decline in the overall percentage of female characters in speaking roles, dropping from 37% in 2022 to 35% in 2023. Additionally, the percentage of films with female protagonists decreased from 33% to 28%.
One notable observation was the age distribution of female characters, with the study revealing that female characters were predominantly in their 20s and 30s, while male characters were more likely to be in their 30s and 40s. The representation of female characters declined significantly as they aged, particularly after reaching their 40s.
Furthermore, the study addressed the racial and ethnic representation of female characters in films. While the percentage of Asian and Asian American females increased slightly, the percentages for white, Black, and Latina female characters decreased proportionally.
The study also emphasized the impact of having women behind the camera on on-screen representation. Films with at least one woman director and/or writer were found to feature higher percentages of female protagonists, major roles, and speaking characters compared to films with exclusively male filmmakers.
Overall, the study underscores the ongoing challenges and disparities faced by female characters in the film industry, highlighting the need for greater diversity and representation both on and off-screen.
