NEW DELHI: Students and teachers of Delhi University gathered at Arts Faculty on Saturday demanding release of Hindu College professor Ratan Lal. Against his arrest, students protested outside North Delhi Cyber Cell on Friday night as well.
Lal was arrested on Friday night by Delhi Police following a complaint over his “objectionable” post on social media.
At the protest, All India Students Association (AISA) working general secretary Prasenjeet said, “The rulers have always been scared of our teachers. This attack by the police on our teacher Ratan Lal is a targeted attack on the movement for equal education. We will fight tooth and nail to ensure the release of our professor.”
Former DUTA executive Abha Dev Habib said, “This violence on our freedom will not be tolerated by Delhi University.”
Teacher activist Laxman Yadav said, “this bogey of ‘hurt sentiment’ cannot dictate the law of India. The only law is the Constitution.”
The AISA’s unit at Jawaharlal Nehru University had also called for a protest against the arrest. A statement by the unit said, “Ratan Lal has been given bail. However, our protest today will happen as scheduled. We will demand withdrawal of the case against the teacher.”
