Hundreds of students are settling into routines at a newly opened community college in Knox County. Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College opened its doors last week to more than 260 students from Knox and surrounding counties.
Through a partnership with local schools, it’s possible for Knox County high school students to take courses there and graduate high school with an associate’s degree.
Derek Collins is Administrative Coordinator at the Knox campus. He said the school is a good thing for the area.
“It is an opportunity, you know, especially for Knox Countians that they need to take advantage of and there’s things out there for them. We’ve just got to encourage not only high school students, but we target adults as well that are looking for a different path in life,” said Collins.
The college offers courses in phlebotomy, welding and computer science among others.
Collins said there are around nine students learning how to weld.
“All of them know that it’s a great opportunity for them. Once they learn how to weld, once they learn how to do the different types of welding and can get certificates, then they know there’s jobs waiting on them as soon as they can get done,” said Collins.
The college is now looking to enroll students in the next semester.
SKCTC also has campuses in Cumberland, Harlan, Middlesboro, Pineville and Whitesburg.
