Students pull off impressive upside-down stunt to save dog from canal

Two students have been praised for their heroic effort in saving a dog that had managed to fall into a canal. The impressive rescue mission was caught on camera and has since gone viral online.

The dog's distressed owner, Batu Akyol, was grasping the lead belonging to his canine that had unfortunately just fallen into the Ancoats Canal in Manchester.

Thankfully, Jack Spencer Furmston and Ben Camphor, both 20, were walking home from a coffee shop when they spotted the nightmare unfolding, and rushed in to help rescue the poor pooch.

Ben, the tallest of the group, decided to spring into action and try to grab the soaked dog.

"Everyone was panicking. I couldn't let that dog down and not help", Ben told MailOnline.

Jack and five others decided to hold on tight to Ben's legs while he dangled head-first over the wall bordering the canal, desperately trying to reach the man's pet.

Dabhidh MchicEamailinn, who was walking on the other side of the water, spotted what was happening and couldn't help, so filmed the situation instead.

The heartwarming footage caught the moment that Ben managed to grab the dog's collar, and then subsequently support the dog's body with his other hand.

The group then all pull the pair up to safety as spectators cheered at the amazing rescue.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, reacted to the video with several clapping hands emojis, praising the efforts.

Others also flocked to praise the lads, with one writing: "Not all heroes wear capes. Well done lads."

"Ah that's lovely. Warms the heart", someone else praised.

"Can't deal with that", another wrote, referring to the cuteness of the video.

"Well done lads, take the rest of the day off", a Twitter user gushed.
