Students in narrow escape after school bus veers into ditch in Cork

Thirty students have escaped unharmed after the school bus they were travelling on veered into a ditch in West Cork this afternoon.

The incident happened on the R593 road in the Bauravilla are between Drimoleague and Skibbereen at around 4pm on Thursday.

The Bus Eireann bus was carrying 30 pupils when it went off road into a ditch and was left leaning precariously to one side.

Luckily. there were no major injuries reported and the students managed to escape from the bus through the emergency door.

Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after the incident.

Local taximan Declan Coakley of BlueSkyCabs came upon the scene as it happened and said those onboard were "very lucky" the bus didn't go all the way over.

Speaking to Cork Beo, he said: "It didn't seem to be going very fast but then it kind of tipped over. There's a little bit of a drop in that stretch.

"Thankfully they all managed to get out the emergency door. It could've been very serious if the bus had gone fully on its side."

A Bus Eireann spokesperson confirmed an investigation into the incident is now underway. They also confirmed that the school children managed to get out of the bus and alternative transport was arranged for them.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí attended a single vehicle collision, involving a bus, earlier this afternoon on the R593 near Bauravilla in Co. Cork.

"No injuries have been reported."
