Students and workers in Lanarkshire town evacuated over fears of major gas leak

A large number of workers and students have been evacuated in a Lanarkshire town after fears of a major gas leak.

Fire crews remain at the scene at Wardpark Industrial Estate in Cumbernauld, while gas engineers are also on site investigating the matter.

It came as many concerned residents reported a "strong smell of gas" throughout the town at around 10am this morning.

People at Cumbernauld College and workers from a number of firms including the Job Centre and Royal Mail sorting office on Muirhead Road have been evacuated as a result of the ongoing incident.

Gas network SGN say engineers are on site carrying out an investigation in the area.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We were alerted at 10.50am on Monday, 28 November to reports of a gas leak at Wardpark Industrial Estate, Cumbernauld.

"Operations Control mobilised one fire appliance and crews are currently in attendance at the scene."

And Adam Smith, SNP Councillor for Cumbernauld East, says he will keep locals up to date after he was in contact with SGN.

He said: "I have been made aware of a strong smell of gas in the Kildrum area this morning and have contacted Scotland Gas Networks (SGN).

"They advise engineers are on their way to Cumbernauld now to establish the problem and consider what repairs may be required.

"Reports of gas have come from in and around Tarbolton Road and SGN has assigned the reference W119113240. I will share any further updates once SGN are aware of the cause and any required repair works."

SGN have since updated locals on the incident and have told that the smell has not been caused by gas.

In a Tweet, the firm wrote: "We've been on site in the G67 area of #Cumbernauld where there is an environmental smell in the air.

"The cause of the smell in the air hasn't been caused by gas, but if you have any safety concerns and can smell gas in your property, always call 0800 111 999."
