An engineering student was stabbed to death and another student injured during a fight between two groups of students on the premises of Reva University, a private university near Bagalur, North Bengaluru, on Friday night.
The deceased has been identified as Bhaskar Jetty, 22, a fourth year Mechanical Engineering student hailing from Gujarat. The incident occurred during the annual college fest that was celebrated on Friday. He was stabbed in his chest by a group of students, the police said. Though he was immediately taken to a nearby private hospital, he succumbed to his injuries later in the night.
Another student Sharath was also injured in the head during the scuffle and is being treated at a private hospital. He is said to be out of danger. He was hit by an iron rod on the head, the police said.
The police said according to preliminary information from the college authorities and students, a scuffle broke out between two groups of students around 9.45 p.m. over a trivial issue and a group of students, said to be three in number, attacked Bhaskar and Sharath. Sources said that the two groups of students had an altercation earlier in the day too and this was probably the second time they clashed.
A senior police official said that they were yet to ascertain a clear sequence of events of what happened and who all were involved in the incident. “The injured student also did not help us piece together the details of the incident clearly. We are analysing CCTV footage from the premises,” said an official. However, a senior official claimed that there was no footage of the actual attack and incident. “We have leads in the case and are working on it,” said the official.
“We are yet to nab the assailants who stabbed him. Investigation is on,” said Laxmi Prasad, DCP (North East).
The police said the deceased student had a guardian in Mathikere and parents in Gujarat, both of whom have been informed. Autopsy was conducted on the body and handed over to his parents on Saturday evening, the police said.
