A student nurse admits he will have to go private to get the healthcare he needs following his experience at University Hospital Wishaw.
The man, who asked not to be named, was suffering from pancreatitis when he attended the hospital’s A&E department.
Due to the lack of beds he was put into a single room with another patient.
He said “I attended A&E on a Sunday night for five hours and was admitted into the hospital with pancreatitis.
“I was told I would be put onto a ward and then would go for an MRI to see if they were able to do surgery.
“There wasn’t any space in a ward so they put me in a single room with another patient who was very distressed.
“You couldn’t even get a curtain between us or a cabinet for our stuff.
“We had one cord between us so it was very difficult.
“I was given the option of staying and getting an MRI before going for surgery or discharge myself and speak to my GP about getting an MRI in the community which would be at least six weeks.
“I decided to discharge myself because I was very un comfortable.”
The man has now decided to have his MRI on the private sector.
“An MRI in the private sector costs around £400 which my family have kindly helped me pay for,” said the man.
“It breaks my heart to have to do it. I’m a student nurse and want to work in the NHS but it’s sad to see the mess it is in.”
David Watson, Chief of Nursing at University Hospital Wishaw, said: “We are sorry that this patient has concerns.
“We are extremely busy and patients may have to wait longer then we would like to be admitted or receive diagnostic tests but every patient is receiving the care and treatment they require.
“We would encourage this patient to contact our patient affairs team at patientaffairs.wishaw@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk so we can address the concerns he has raised directly with him.”
