A college student died while more than two dozen other passengers and the driver were injured when a bus travelling back from a hockey game hit a tree in suburban Boston, authorities said.
A preliminary investigation indicates the bus was returning to Brandeis University from a hockey game at Northeastern University in Boston, US, at approximately 10:30pm on Saturday.
The vehicle careered in Waltham, not so far from the campus, according to a statement from Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Waltham police Chief Kevin O'Connell.
One student died at the scene, who was identified on Sunday afternoon by the university as Vanessa Mark, who was an undergraduate.
She was 25 and currently on leave from the school.
"Vanessa was an active and cherished member of the Brandeis community," according to an email sent by school spokesperson Julie Jette.
The university, which has about 5,500 undergraduate and graduate students, canceled classes for Monday and Tuesday.
"This will enable some students to return to family and friends sooner than the normal holiday schedule would have allowed," the university's statement said.
The statement said the remaining 26 passengers and bus driver "sustained injuries of varying degrees" and were taken to area hospitals.
No other names were made public and no one has been charged.
Video and images from the scene showed a bus with heavy front end damage and almost every window smashed.
A debris field remained at the site of the crash hours later.
Brandeis in a statement on early Sunday, said 17 of those who has been injured were released from the hospital and the remainder have been admitted.
The statement said: "Given the number of injured people and the different hospitals to which they were transported, it is taking time to determine the status of everyone involved, including which passengers are Brandeis students."
The crash remains under investigation and police are asking witnesses to come forward.
Brandeis said grief counselors were available at the university's counseling center.
