Student Athlete Expelled For Etching Racial Slur On Teammate

Jurors in Parkland school shooter case view high school crime scene

Recently, a disturbing incident unfolded at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, where a student athlete allegedly etched a racial slur onto the chest of a teammate during an informal gathering of the swim team. The incident, which occurred on September 6, involved the use of a box cutter to scratch a derogatory term on the victim's chest.

The victim's family, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed shock and betrayal as the act was committed by a fellow student-athlete whom the victim considered a friend and trusted. The college confirmed that the student responsible is no longer enrolled at the institution, although specific disciplinary actions were not disclosed due to privacy laws.

Gettysburg College and the victim's family issued a joint statement emphasizing the ongoing investigation and the seriousness of the situation. College President Bob Iuliano condemned the actions, stressing that there is no place for such behavior on campus.

The incident has sparked discussions about identity, race, and marginalization within the college community. The college's chief diversity officer will lead efforts to address the incident and implement concrete actions to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

While the family has not filed a complaint with local police, they retain the right to pursue criminal charges. Additionally, complaints have been lodged with NAACP groups and the Pennsylvania Commission on Human Relations.

Following the incident, the students involved were temporarily suspended from swim team activities pending a conduct review. The victim was interviewed by coaching staff and subsequently dismissed from the team, as reported by the family.

As the investigation continues, the college and the family have not disclosed whether the involved students, including the victim, have been allowed to resume swim team activities. Gettysburg College, with a diverse student body, is navigating this challenging situation with a commitment to addressing issues of discrimination and fostering a more inclusive campus environment.
