Student, 21, stabbed to death on night out never knew he was set to be a dad

The girlfriend of a student stabbed to death by a teen on a night out in Kent was due to tell him the next morning he was going to be a dad, it has emerged.

Andre Bent, 21, died after Vasilios Ofogeli, 17, stabbed him in the chest with a nine-inch machete following the MoStack event last summer.

Andre’s uncle Stephen McIntosh said after the court case: "She was pregnant and he never knew. Maria was going to break the news on the morning he died."

The child, a girl, is due in April.

Mr McIntosh added: "He went with his friends to celebrate a simple birthday and just never came home."

The uncle said that Andre had his “bags packed” to start university when he was stabbed near the Gallery Nightclub in Maidstone, Kent, on August 25 last year.

His killer, then 16, had travelled to the venue from his home in London with friends.

After the concert CCTV footage captured him covering his face with a jumper and he then armed himself with the machete before launching a series of “callous” attacks.

First he knifed Joshua Robinson, Patrick Conceicao and Lucas Baker, at around 3am spreading mayhem on the streets.

Finally, he plunged the knife, which had two cutting edges, into Andre’s chest before trying to flee in MoStack’s car.

But the London-born rapper, whose hit single "Shine Girl" featured Glastonbury-headliner Stormzy, shut the door on him. Earlier in the evening before the violence, he had twice urged him to leave.

Just hours later Ofogeli caught a plane to Athens in Greece, before returning to the UK on Saturday 31 August.

Police arrested the killer as he stepped off the plane at Stansted airport.

Detectives discovered Ofogeli had fled after finding videos of him rapping online which then led them to his home address.

Officers also found the murder weapon when searching the neighbour’s garden.

During his trial the teenager was allowed to remain anonymous because of a court order.

But a jury at Maidstone Crown Court took just under 12 hours to convict the smirking Ofogeli of murder, two charges of attempted murder and one of wounding with intent.

The judge then lifted the order protecting the identity of Ofogeli, stating he will be sentenced on April 24 and locked up in a young offenders institute.

Detective Chief Inspector Patrick Milford, the Senior investigating officer of Kent Police, said: “The callous and random nature of the knife attacks committed by Ofogeli on Andre and three other men are deeply troubling and paint a picture of a young man who thinks nothing of attacking others with a deadly weapon.

"He is fully deserving of the lengthy prison sentence he will now have to serve.”

“Andre Bent was a popular and much-loved young man with his whole life ahead of him, but his future was cut short by Vasilios Ofogeli in the worst way imaginable.

He added: “Ofogeli and his friends had travelled to Maidstone from their home in London and brought with them a level of violence that we simply do not tolerate here in Kent.

"There is no excuse for anyone to go out while armed with a knife or to cause such serious harm to others, and we relentlessly pursue those who do to ensure they are brought to justice.”

Seven others who took part in the frightening incident will also be sentenced after they pleaded guilty to violent disorder.

They are Nathaniel Small, 22, Mohamed Gelani, 24, Darien Thompson, 21, Yusuf Aweys, 20, Jerral Johnson, 26, Kaline Riley, 23 and Rheo Lawrence, 29
