Stuart Margolin dead: The Rockford Files actor and Emmy Award winner dies

Actor Stuart Margolin has died aged 82, his stepson announced on Monday.

The actor is best known for his role as Evelyn "Angel" Martin in The Rockford Files, while he impressively boasted a CV listing over 120 screen credits.

It was his role as Angel for which he'll best be remembered after he won back-to-back Emmy Awards in 1979 and 1980 for his performances.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, stepson Max Martini wrote: "The two most profound moments in my life… the birth of my kids and being bedside as my step-father passed this morning. My mother, brother and I holding his hands. All the time in between birth and death, life, is up to us to fill with equally profound moments."

He continued: "Love you Stuart Margolin. A great actor/writer/producer/director. But more importantly, a profoundly gifted step-father that was always there with love and support for his family. RIP Pappy. Keep ‘em cold."

No further details or cause of death was provided.

Stuart starred in over three dozen episodes of The Rockford Files - including the series’ first and last. His character was constantly asking the main character Jim Rockford (James Garner) for help to get out of a number of mix ups.

As well as the long-running series, Stuart starred in eight of the show's TV movies during the 1990s.

He also had guest appearances on popular series as The Fugitive, Ben Casey and Alfred Hitchcock Presents, before featuring on the likes of Ironside, The Virginian, The Monkees, Bewitched, The F.B.I. and The Partridge Family.

In the 1980s, he became a regular on sitcom Mr Smith, taking up the role of the boss of a character who was charged with keeping track of the title character.

Afterwards, he settled into mostly character-actor appearances and featured on shows such as Crazy Like a Fox and The Tracey Ullman Show.

Following the news of his death, fans took to social media to send their messages of condolence.
