Stuart Kettlewell insists he’ll let results do the talking as he prepares for his first audition for the Motherwell manager’s job.
The former Ross County boss admits he’d struggle to turn down an offer of the job permanently even though it would be a gamble after stepping up from his job in the Well academy. Kettlewell is among the favourites to land the position full-time and his hand would be strengthened should he get off to a flier against St Mirren tomorrow night.
Fir Park directors don’t want to delay a decision too long with the club in the midst of a relegation dogfight and other names in the frame include John Hughes, Jim Goodwin, James McPake and Ian McCall. Kettlewell insists he won’t go pushing himself to the board for the job vacated by Steven Hammell just three days ago. But he said: “If the club felt that I was a guy who could take this club in the next 14 games and make things better, and they believed in me and thought I was the right fit, it’s something for me to consider.
“See if they don’t and they want to go down a different route? That’s how it goes. I’m not a salesman. I’m not going to pitch for myself and say that I’m the right guy.
“I’m not going to do that to a board or anybody else. Stepping up from a development job to be a manager and then you end up losing our job...I suppose it’s part and parcel of football. So there are risks. There’s always a risk.
“But sometimes when that’s put in front of you and people feel you can make a difference it’s a hard thing to turn down. Any proper football person will tell you that. There are factors you consider when you’re asked to take the job but I’m a team player and if a group of people are struggling then I like to think I’d always pitch myself forwards.
“This was about helping others: it’s nothing to do with my ego, what job I want to do or where I want to be: it’s about helping this football club to get one result. I want to steady the ship a little bit and try to make us more difficult to play against.
“I was asked to take the team on Wednesday. Moving beyond that, I will pick that up at 10pm on Wednesday night to see how we move forward in the next chunk. Whether it’s myself or someone else comes in, whether it’s beyond that, we just need to wait and see.”
