Stuart Broad and Harry Gurney acquire new pub and complete £50,000 revamp

Two Nottinghamshire cricketers have acquired another pub and plan to recreate the success of their flagship venue. Stuart Broad, who plays for England, and Harry Gurney, a former Nottinghamshire seamer, first acquired The Tap and Run in Upper Broughton.

Since doing so, the country pub and kitchen went on to win accolades including the Pub of the Year 2021 award in Leicestershire. Progress was set back by a devastating fire at The Tap and Run in June, which left the roof unsalvageable and the interior severely damaged by flames, smoke and water damage.

But the pair are planning to reopen The Tap and Run in the spring as significant rebuilding work continues, and they have now announced that they will be taking on another establishment. They are now running The Griffin Inn in Swithland, Leicestershire, and are already taking bookings.

Harry said: "When Everards called to say the Griffin was about to become available it was an opportunity we jumped at. As a Loughborough lad, I know the reputation this pub has, and I’m thrilled and honoured to take the baton from John and Jay after 20 years."

Stuart Broad said: "Everards have some wonderful pubs, some superb beer and most importantly, their values as an organisation are closely aligned to ours at the Cat & Wickets Pub Company, we are very excited about working with them."

The Cat & Wickets Pub Company was able to acquire the Griffin thanks to investment from Lee Cash, the founder of Peach Pubs. Lee added: "I have viewed hundreds of pubs in the last twenty years and not many got me as excited as the Griffin does. We have done a two-and-a-half-day refurbishment to the tune of £50k, working with Richard Brooks of Leicester-based Tanwood, who have done an incredible job in such a short space of time."
