Struggling Rangers facing acid Celtic test while tributes pour in for king of football Pele - Hotline

The death of Pele prompted Hotline tributes from callers who believe football has lost its greatest ever player.

Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach, Florida, emailed: "Most people today never saw Pele play but for the ones that did it was something they would never forget. There's great sadness with his passing but Pele will never be forgotten. A three time World Cup winner, first as a teen of 17 years old and ending with that truly wonderful 1970 final against Italy with Pele destroying the italians.

"He was worshipped by all Brazilians, greatly admired by football purists across the world. A modest man who was such a brilliant player to watch. For many he was the greatest and rightly called 'a rei' - the king. Eddie Easson, Ballingry, Fife added: "The loss of another truly football great. Pele is probably the best. Unlike Maradona and Messi he had dignity and empathy for the game.

"He played at a time when players literally got kicked off the park. This happened in '66 where tackles on him were cynical to say the least. RIP THE KING OF FOOTBALL."

Gary Smith, Glasgow, said: "The younger generations will say Messi or Maradona were the best ever but Pele was the first global superstar and for me, he was the greatest. Three World Cup wins and the star player in the greatest team of all time, that Brazil team of 1970, says it all."

There's also an Old Firm clash looming at Ibrox on Monday. Paul Price, Belfast, said: "After Wednesday night's performance I'd play Mooy in the middle along with Hatate and Calmac with Juranovic restored to right back against Rangers. Although who plays up front I"ll leave up to big Ange!"

Paddy Gowans emailed: "Neil Lennon says if Celtic beat Rangers on Monday the league is won. He should know, as he cost us 10 in a row by not resigning."

Rangers fan Alan McGaw, Alloa, emailed: "We did struggle a wee bit on Wednesday but for the upcoming Old Firm game on Monday we need to up our game, especially in defence. Yes, it was another three points and that’s four wins in a row since Michael Beale took over, but there's still a long way to go and it's most important getting injured players back ASAP. Nice to see Alex Lowry getting his chance on Wednesday."

Dons fan Hugh McKirdy isn't happy with his lot. Nor his team's former boss, for that matter. He said: "Derek McInnes says we're (Aberdeen) a good team. Come on Derek, don't patronise us! We're rank rotten! One of the worst in my 43 years as a fan."

Frank McFerran, Carrickfergus, added: "I believe Jim Goodwin’s time is up at Aberdeen. It’s his team, so he has no excuses. Neil Lennon waiting in the wings for a call to arms maybe?"

Finally, Dr Robert S Pender emailed: "It is completely out of order the continued banging of drums at football games. It is even worse when games are on TV. Give us a break and bin your toys."
