Structural engineering firm Cundall has grown turnover to nearly £80m and achieved record profit, new accounts show.
The Newcastle-based engineering design consultancy runs offices across the UK as well as bases overseas in Australia, China and Romania, among other countries. It now employs nearly 1,000 people having boosted its technical and administrative staff in the year to the end of June 2022.
Operating profits at the partner-owned firm increased from £8.7m to £10.9m during the year, which was described as a strong performance that has allowed Cundall to expand its capabilities. And post-year end, the firm spoke of further international expansion that was already under way.

Plans to deliver net zero carbon design across all Cundall projects by 2030 were also laid out. While specialists in sustainable building design, the firm has also had a hand in varied projects such as white water canoe courses - including the course used at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games - and The Storm Coaster indoor rollercoaster in Dubai, which gives thrill-seekers the world’s fastest vertical launch.
Cundall engineers also worked on delivery of the first new-build distillery in the Cairngorms National Park for owners, Gordon & MacPhail. Having been completed in October last year, whisky will be distilled on the site next to the River Spey, and the development includes a visitor centre, bistro and bar area. And teams from the firm's London and Doha offices designed the cable structures spanning the roof of the Al Bayt Stadium which hosted the opening ceremony of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Tomás Neeson, Cundall partner, wrote in a report accompanying the accounts: "Despite the shared challenges served by the pandemic, Cundall performed strongly and achieved records for staff employment and profit over the year. This is testament to our staff and our clients who continue to appreciate what Cundall can do as trusted advisors across many market sectors.
"This has enabled us to further build our capabilities and expand our skills offering to clients and communities. As a business we achieved Net Carbon Zero in the previous year and have set a plan to deliver Net Zero Carbon design on all Cundall projects by 2030, as we continually strive to deliver a low carbon future for the built environment."
