Striking worker hit by car on Jacob's Bakery picket line

A woman was hit by a car while striking for better pay outside Jacob's Bakery in Aintree.

Around 650 factory employees voted to escalate their strike action earlier this month after taking part in a number of twelve-hour walk-outs since September 26. They remain on "permanent strike" at the picket line on Long Lane as they fight for a pay rise of 8.5%, put forward by the GMB Union.

At around 6.30pm yesterday, November 27, a female employee was hit by a car at the site and suffered a minor leg injury.

GMB officer Lisa Ryan claimed the incident was caused by "employees driving over picket line."

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "At around 6.30pm on Sunday, November 27, officers were called to a report of a collision involving a silver Volvo and a woman outside a factory on Long Lane in Aintree. The woman suffered a minor injury to her leg but declined hospital treatment. The male driver remained at the scene and assisted with police enquiries."

A North West Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed the service didn't attend the incident.

A spokesman for Pladis Global, the confectionery and snack foods company which owns Jacob's, said: "We are aware of an incident that took place on the picket line last night. The safety and wellbeing of all on site is our top priority and we have assisted the police with their enquiries."
