Strikes in Scotland will continue in August as workers from sectors ranging from rail to Edinburgh Council confirm walkouts. Unions including RMT, Aslef, and Unite will be taking industrial action this month.
Edinburgh residents have been put on alert about a 13-day strike during the Fringe festival. A total of 250 council members in waste, recycling, and street cleaning are set to walk out from August 18 to 30 amid a pay dispute with Unite.
What's more, Unite members who work at DHL are taking industrial action over a week in a move that will upset the supply of Sainsbury's stores.
What makes a strike 'official'? Wales Online reports an explanation from NI Direct : "Industrial action is 'official' if it is formally backed by a trade union and members of that union are taking part in it.
"If you're involved in industrial action against your employer, you'll probably be in breach of your employment contract and you are therefore unlikely to be paid when taking industrial action. However, you will be protected against being dismissed for taking industrial action provided your union follows the right procedure when organising it."
More strikes could be in store as Unite 'imminently' finalises dates for council waste workers in Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Dundee.
