Kevin Clifton couldn't hide his emotion as he learnt more about his family tree on Who Do You Think You Are?
The Strictly Come Dancing star, 40, who has a baby with Stacey Dooley, went to Canada for the programme where he found out about a relative called Matooski.
Matooski was from the First Nations of Canada and had sadly, Kevin discovered, been subjected to racism.
Opening up about her painful past, he said: "It's funny because I'm as far removed from Matooski. I'm a 40-year-old white man who's a ballroom dancer.
"I've never had to experience any kind of prejudice or racism or anything like that. It's just not something I've ever had to deal with.
"I felt very defensive and protective of her even though it was a long time ago. Just the fact that it was connected with my history," he told The Express and other press.
Kevin said finding out about Matooksi was a "big thing to process" , admitting he didn't think it would get emotional on the show, but then at that moment, I did."
The dancer, who welcomed his first child, Minnie, with partner Stacey in January this year, recently said he was "celebrating the most wonderful past 5 years."
Stacey and Kevin met in 2018 when they danced together on Strictly and the new dad thanked the documentary maker for helping him "fall in love with dancing again."
In a candid Instagram post, Kevin, who left Strictly in 2020, wrote: "Don’t like to talk about it too much in public but a few years ago i wasn’t always doin as well as I always tried to make out.
"Today I’m celebrating the most wonderful past 5 yrs."
Kevin’s episode of Who Do You Think You Are? is available to watch on Thursday, June 22 at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
