Strictly’s Anton Du Beke confirmed as Bruno Tonioli's replacement after exit

Strictly Come Dancing's Anton Du Beke will return as a judge for the upcoming series and beyond, it has been confirmed.

On Thursday, it was announced that original judge Bruno Tonioli has left the BBC show as a judge for good, having previously been replaced temporarily.

He confirmed it was his decision, and gave his blessing for Anton to replace him.

The BBC confirmed that the star, who appeared on the British ballroom series for 17 runs from 2004 to 2019, had fallen victim to the pandemic and would be permanently replaced by former pro dancer Anton - while Bruno will stick with Dancing with the Stars.

Anton will join usual judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Shirley Ballas as a new batch of celebrities take to the dance floor this autumn.

Anton said of the news: "Woohooo! This is BRILLIANT news. Everyone knows how much I absolutely love the show and I’m utterly delighted to be continuing as a regular judge."

He added: "And I get to make the final again - now I know how Giovanni feels!" referring to professional dancer Giovanni Pernice.

Head judge Shirley said of her return: "Being a judge on Strictly is such a joy and honour for me, and I can’t wait to be back at the studio waving my paddle.

"Every year the wonderful production team surpass themselves and I know they have some brilliant plans in store for 2022. I’m so excited to get started."

Craig, who has been on the panel since the beginning, said: "I am beyond thrilled to be returning to Strictly, I can’t believe it will be my 20th series! It’s going to be Fab-u-lous!"

Motsi commented: "Last year’s series of Strictly was one of the highlights of my career, it has had such a real impact which has been incredible to witness. I am so proud to be a part of this show and I am so looking forward to returning for my fourth series!"

Bruno spoke out over his exit on The One Show on Thursday, but said never to rule him out for a comeback - as he hoped to work with Strictly again.

He said: "I miss it so much," before adding: "Because of the travel situation I cannot guarantee I’m going to be there.

"They need continuity, it's my decision and I think Anton has done a fantastic job and he deserves to be on that seat."

He went on: "Anton you have done a fantastic job, you deserve it. Carry on, do me proud but you’ve done it for me anyway."

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC later this year.
