Strictly's Amy Dowden shares surgery update after breast cancer operation

Strictly Come Dancing ’s Amy Dowden has updated fans following her breast cancer operation.

The 32-year-old announced in May she had been diagnosed with the disease after finding a lump in her breast, and since going public with the devastating news, Amy has kept her social media followers in the loop as she begins treatment.

On Wednesday, she uploaded a snap of her sat in a hospital bed with her thumbs up, as she revealed she was preparing for an operation that was the first “step” on her journey.

“Step one to beating cancer! Rrrrrrready for this fight and more determined than ever to get back on the dance floor,” Amy wrote.

On Thursday, she took to her Instagram Stories to give worried fans an update on her surgery, as she revealed she was feeling “positive”.

“Surgery went well. Big thanks to my two surgeons and nurses who have been so utterly amazing and looking after me,” she wrote.

“Very sore but focusing on the positives they said the surgery went well! Thanks for all the support and messages,” Amy added.

The Welsh dancer, who is a huge favourite with Strictly fans after joining the BBC One show in 2017, shared her cancer diagnosis last month, and said she was “determined” to beat the disease.

“Hey all, I’ve got some news which isn’t easy to share. I’ve recently been diagnosed with breast cancer but I’m determined to get back on that dancefloor before you know it,” Amy wrote.

In an interview with Hello! magazine following her diagnosis, Amy said “everything happened so fast” after she realised the lump had grown, and was rushed into hospital for an emergency referral.

There, doctors told her it was “grade 3 breast cancer”, but assured her they had caught it early and “not be too alarmed because grade 3 would be expected in somebody of my age.”

Amy said it was her was the overwhelming support of her former Strictly dance partner Tom Fletcher, and his wife Giovanna, that helped her go public with her health news.

“Giovanna’s encouragement has been central to my decision to share my story in the hopes of helping others,” she said.
