History making Strictly star could be first celeb with Down's Syndrome to win Glitterball

He made TV history after becoming the first BBC children’s presenter with Down’s syndrome.

Now George Webster is set to break down barriers again on Strictly Come Dancing’s Christmas special.

The 22-year-old will take to the floor with dance partner Amy Dowden on Sunday.

George has previously said how being on CBeebies was vital in terms of “opening the conversation of disability at an earlier age.”

He added: “If we can get children to think of disabilities in a different way then we’re changing the world already.”

And BBC insiders hope his appearance on its flagship show will further this crucial cause even more.

One said: “George is a real star in the making with a big future. It was a pleasure having him along for the ride.”

For pro partner Amy, being paired with George was “magical” and she said he could even win the title.

She said: “I personally think from a professional point of view and from a dancing point of view that George has a good shot of getting there and raising the trophy.

“What I’m loving most is seeing the joy on George’s face every day.

“Watching him improve as a dancer has been fantastic, and it’s a dream come true that we get to do the Strictly Christmas Special dancing a Charleston.”

Asked what George’s qualities were on the dancefloor, Amy added: “He’s just adorable. I don’t want this partnership to end.

“He comes in, he has the biggest smile and he works so hard. I’ve never met anyone who says ‘Thank you’ so much! You can see he’s living the dream and we have become really good friends. We are team ‘Wowden’, and he’s just really talented. I don’t think there’s anything George can’t do.”

For Strictly fan George, just getting a call-up was a dream come true.

He said: “I’ve always loved the show. I watch it every year and I remember when me and my sister were dancing around the living room.

“So when the call came in I said, “Yes, yes!”, Straight away. It blew my mind actually being here!

“We’re going to be dancing in gold outfits, I love them. They’re so cool. It feels really fun, I just love the whole experience, it’s so much fun and I love to bring the joy to everyone on Christmas Day.”

As for how George will fare in front of the judges, Amy says he can cope with anything, even any acerbic comments from Craig Revel Horwood.

“I think George is going to impress them all, I think even Mr Grumpy Boots Craig,” she said.

“Craig is going to love this character and George certainly brings an abundance of personality to this dance.”

George particularly hopes to impress judges Shirley Ballas and Motsi Mabuse.

“They both have a lovely personality and they’re both into all the details in the technique,” he said. “I’m looking forward to showing them what I can do.”

This year’s Strictly special will also have Girls Aloud’s Nicola Roberts partnering Giovanni Pernice.

Soap star Alexandra Mardell will dance with Kai Widdrington, Gavin & Stacey star Larry Lamb with Nadiya Bychkova, DJ Rickie Haywood-Williams with Luba Mushtuk and podcaster Rosie Ramsey will perform with Neil Jones.

Last year, singer Anne-Marie and professional dancer Graziano Di Prima were crowned winners, scoring a perfect 40 for their cha-cha-cha.

Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special is at 5.10pm on Christmas Day on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
