Kaye and Kai take to the floor for their final dance, to ‘Give Me Just a Little More Time’ by Chairman of the Board.
Lovely to see all their fellow contestants joining the dancefloor pile-on again – we haven’t seen that for a couple of years, and I’ve really missed it.
Time for the judging! Craig saves Matt and Nadiya, as does Motsi. Anton agrees, and there’s a sense that they’re all choosing on the basis of who was less awful.
But that means KAYE AND KAI are the first couple to leave Strictly. Shirley saves Kaye and Kai, which perhaps softens the blow.
I mean, obviously someone has to go but that’s sad news for Kaye, and also for Kai – he never got to compete in the Grand Final last year after AJ’s leg injury, and this year he’s fallen at the first hurdle. BOO.

Next up it’s Matt and Nadiya’s disco Samba. Absolutely love Nadiya’s Disco Mermaid outfit, but sadly Matt’s hips are still constrained by the cut of those trousers. Plenty of footwork mistakes here too – this is a tough one to call.
It’s dance-off time!
Kaye and Kai are up first, dancing their Charleston. It’s still joyfully shambolic, but perhaps marginally fewer mistakes than last night. Oh, I spoke to soon – the last thirty seconds of that were a dis-AH-ster, darling.
Next week is MOVIE WEEK, because it’s never too early for a feem. Traditionally I include ‘movies I’ve never seen’ in the bingo and everyone gets really drunk.
So who is joining Kaye and Kai in the dance off? Jayde and Karen are safely through to next week, along with Molly and Carlos, Fleur and Vito, Helen and Gorka, Will and Nancy, Tony and Katya (see?) and James and Amy.
Which means MATT AND NADIYA in the dance-off.
Based on last night’s scores, Kaye and Kai SHOULD survive this, but neither dance was brilliant and either could up their game in the dance-off. How excited are you about watching them both again? No, me neither.
Time for a musical interlude, courtesy of pop powerhouse Robbie Williams. Look, I know he’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but can we please acknowledge that he’s being doing his solo thing for 25 years now, through all manner of personal and professional ups and downs, and he still has a certain…presence.
YES, there was the swing band interlude nobody asked for, and YES there was that weird Covid Christmas song that we all immediately pretended never happened, but ‘She’s The One’ is a beautiful song. Even if this version does sound a tiny bit like it’s being sung by Kermit The Frog.
He’s wearing Shirley’s suit from yesterday, but buttoned up wrong, and there is angsty contempo-waft from Neil and Lauren.

Last night on Strictly: The difficult second week, when reality bites and our celebs realise that one week to perfect a dance really isn’t very long.
Highlights: Lovely music, the return of Clauditorium mayhem, a few stand-out dances.
Lowlights: Matt Goss thrusting in tight white trousers, Motsi’s Spontex dress, Claudia’s flamingo flares, a general air of exhaustion.

And we’re off! Tonight’s opening pro dance features the kind of elbow-length leather gloves they use on Countryfile to investigate a heifer. But lovely to hear INXS’s ‘Need You Tonight’ – I was a HUGE fan in the 80s.
Well this is all quite sexy and fabulous, and I will never tire of seeing Johannes dance in killer heels.

I’m definitely adding ‘coloured corduroy’ to next week’s AR Bingo. Lovely pair of red ones there, am keeping my eye out for salmon or – my personal favourite - mustard. But Colman’s English, not French. We’re not savages.

Slightly intrigued by this Rolex, purely because there is genuinely one very similar in my house, left to my partner by his father. I’m pretty sure it’s not worth TWELVE TO FIFTEEN THOUSAND POUNDS, but if I don’t come back next week you’ll know why.
I love the basic/better/best element of Antiques Roadshow. Never has a gameshow had lower stakes.

I’ve just looked up when Antiques Roadshow started – it was 1979, which is why I can’t remember a time in my life when it wasn’t on Sunday evening TV.
What will the stories be in forty years’ time? ‘It’s a funny tale, actually. I bought it in 2023, from a man was having a family heirloom sale in his front garden so he could pay his final gas bill before his house was repossessed.’
UGLY TOAD. That’s not me passing judgement, the owner calls that mustard ceramic horror Ugly Toad. It’s a really ugly toad, and his wife is quite rightly not a fan.
My partner just wandered in and passed damning judgement on the ugly toad, using words I can’t write in a national newspaper. £900!
Quite like this bejewelled UFO, and the £900 estimate gets a slightly underwhelmed ‘gosh’. ‘Our daughters will be fighting over it,’ she says. OR, you could sell it and go to Tenerife. Problem solved.
Our first ugly vase of the evening! It has pustules, which is probably not the OFFICIAL word for the blobs on the outside. However Serhat Ahmet is, as Shirley would say, extremely good at his job.
The usual pre-Strictly schedule of Countryfile or Doctor Who has been subverted by Antiques Roadshow, which I’m actually rather delighted about. Shall we watch along with a very low-key Sunday bingo? Take a delicate sip from a Lalique vase every time somebody:
Gasps dramatically, then says something terribly British like ‘my goodness’
Knows more about the item than the expert, which begs the question why they came in the first place
Vows never to sell the item, whilst their partner is already frantically Googling auction houses

Very happy to see mayhem back in the Clauditorium after a couple of years off – it’s pure chaos and I love it.
If you can’t remember much of what happened over the past couple of hours, fear not – here’s a very long recap. What were your stand-out dances this evening? I’ll definitely be re-watching Ellie and Nikita, Ritchie and Giovanni, Tyler and Dianne and Molly and Carlos. Jayde and Karen were ace too – they definitely left the best until last.
Scores: 8,9,9,8 – a total of 34 for Molly and Carlos.
Craig loved the outfits and the dance – brilliant. Motsi thought it was slick, fast-paced and rhythmical – she wants to start the evening all over again. Shirley thought it was exceptional – keep working on the fundamentals (DRINK). Anton thought there was so much to love – what a way to end the show. AGREED.

Can we just acknowledge how cute this partnership is? Molly has great musicality even though the umbrella-ography doesn’t quite come together. It’s an incredibly fast routine but Molly does a sterling job of keeping up with Carlos. Right now she feels like the best dancer in this competition – I think this pairing is definitely one to watch.

This week they’re dancing the Quickstep to ‘Love On Top’ by Beyoncé. I’m assuming they’re going to jazz this up to make it more Quicksteppy, but also spare a thought for the Dave Arch singer who is going to deliver four key changes in 90 seconds. COME ON YOU’VE GOT THIS.
Scores: 6,7,6,7 – a total of 26 for Jayde and Karen.
Anton loved how Jayde maintained character, and Craig loved how she led the dance – well done. Motsi loves watching them, and Shirley loved how totally in command Jayde was. A small mistake, but generally very good.
Ooh, lovely sofa with scatter cushions. Jayde has great intent in this Tango, but her footwork is a little patchy and she loses her frame on occasion. These two are incredibly compelling to watch though, and it’s a really powerful partnership. Enjoyed the drama and focus of that – how a Tango should be.

Tonight they’re dancing the Tango to ‘Rumour Has It’ by Adele. Last week they kicked off their glitterball campaign with a Dirrrrty Samba, and this week they’re switching to Ballroom with what I suspect is going to be a Tango with Attitude. Here for it, frankly.
Scores: 7,8,8,8 – a total of 31 for Tyler and Dianne.
Shirley thought Tyler was the real deal – he brings something you can’t teach and she flipping loved it. Anton thought Tyler owned the routine, it was a brilliant job. Craig thought it was jam-packed full of storytelling – well done. Motsi thought Tyler was the most improved of the evening, and she loved it.
So this has some kind of burglary theme involving a broken-down car, and this is a classy Jive from Tyler. Nice retraction and foot placement, and a great job of the Jive basics. This is a great partnership on an evening that’s been a bit hit and miss, dance-wise – really enjoyed that.

This week they’re dancing the Jive to ‘Hit The Road Jack’ by Buster Poindexter. Scott Maslen and Natalie Lowe did a brilliant Jive to this a million years ago, involving a very wobbly door. I always welcome the recycling of sparkly fixtures and fittings, so fingers crossed for a return.
Only three left! Stay with me, people. We’re nearly there.
Scores: 4,6,6,6 – a total of 22 for Matt and Nadiya.
Motsi loved the night fever, but there were times when Matt was looking to Nadiya for reassurance. Shirley loved how Matt’s confidence has grown since last week and he did well in solo, but it needed more fundamentals (drink). Anton loved the groove and the thrusting – it was a magical moment. Craig was slightly distracted by the tight trousers and Matt needs to work on his Samba technique, but well done.
Good LORD, those trousers of Matt’s are really quite tight, and they appear to be inhibiting all hip action. He’s got nice timing and the disco sections are fun, but the basic Samba is really quite stiff and there isn’t much of it. More Night Nurse than Night Fever.

This week they’re dancing the Samba to ‘Night Fever’ by the Bee Gees. I actually really enjoyed their Quickstep last week, although the judges weren’t that fussed.
But now Matt has read Karl Marx and taught himself to dance, does he have Latin hips? Can he Bota Fogo like a pop legend? At this point, I can’t answer that.
Scores: 6,7,7,7 -a total of 27 for Kym and Graziano.
Craig thought Kym’s frame let her down, but he loved the Viennese Waltz content. Motsi thought Kym was a beaming light, and she wants more when Kym is in hold. Shirley loved the content, but the frame was a bit in and out. Anton wants Kym to work on her sidesteps, but it had a lot of quality.

Really enjoying this from Kym and Graz – it’s all quite dreamy, albeit wobbly in places. Is this the first outing for the Strictly wishing well? If it’s granting wishes, I’d quite like a wine.

Tonight they’re dancing the Viennese Waltz to ‘Runaway’ by The Corrs. Georgia May Foote and Giovanni did a Viennese to this song in 2015 and it remains one of my favourite Strictly Viennese Waltzes ever. I do love an Irish fiddle.

Scores: 4,7,6,7 – a total of 24 for Hamza and Jowita. The scoring this evening is WILD.
Anton quite enjoyed it but Hamza’s toes were turned in. Craig thought it was heavy with no retraction and it didn’t really get going until the middle, and then it stopped again. Motsi could see Hamza counting, but he did well. Shirley loved the energy, but she agrees with Craig that it was heavy.
Ooh, this is neon-tastic. As a Jive, it’s a bit stompy and laboured in places but Hamza has great timing and parts of it have HUGE energy. The transitions need work, and I definitely spotted some pigeon toes, but nice work Hamza.

Tonight they’re dancing the Jive to ‘Blinding Lights’ by The Weeknd. Another brilliant tune that deserves the Strictly treatment, although I’m not entirely sure how it works as a Jive. Loved their Foxtrot last week – can’t wait to see Hamza bring some of his positive energy to this Jive.
Scores: 4,6,6,6 – a total of 22 for Kay and Kai. Did…Shirley just give that the same score as Fleur, or did I imagine it? If anyone has details of Shirley’s scoring criteria, I’d love to understand it because frankly I’m at a loss.

Shirley thought it had some lovely moves and it was an improvement from last week. Anton thought Kaye sold it beautifully, but it needs more work in the leg action. Craig thought it was under-danced and underwhelming, but Motsi could see how hard Kaye has been working.

This is mostly reminding me that, as a general rule, I can’t be doing with the Charleston. Kaye’s got lovely energy and incredible legs, but her timing is all over the shop and she’s concentrating so hard in places that she forgets to emote. A great effort, but that didn’t quite come together.

This week they’re dancing the Charleston to ‘Music! Music! Music!’ By Dorothy Provine. Kaye showed us last week that she can work with Kai in hold, but can she do side-by-side, fancy tricks and characterisation? If every there was a time to unleash your inner Loose Woman, Kay, now would be it.
Scores: 7,8,6,7 – a total of 28 for Fleur and Vito.
Ordinarily Claudia can wear anything, but those pastel pink flares really are a crime against fashion.
Motsi loved the lyrical part of the dance, it was a great improvement in capturing the moment. Shirley thought it was absolutely beautiful, but there were too many foot faults. Anton got the refinement he wanted last week but Fleur needs to turn her head a little less. Craig enjoyed the dance – he would have liked to see more Viennese content but Fleur is a gorgeous dancer.
Fleur looks glorious and this contemporary Viennese has some lovely storytelling and some really nice light and shade in the pacing. Some issues with footwork but really enjoyed that, was absolutely beautiful.

Tonight they’re dancing the Viennese Waltz to ‘Glimpse Of Us’ by Joji. Last week Fleur was pulled up by the judges for being a bit frenetic, so now she has a chance to show us she can be floaty and elegant and controlled. I love a Viennese, and it’s a good opportunity for us to see Vito fully dressed. I sense this may be a once-in-a-season occurrence, like spotting a red squirrel.
Scores: 8, 8,8,8 – a total of 32 for Richie and Giovanni.

Craig thought the cartwheel was terrible but the rest of it was FAN-tastic. Motsi thought it was absolutely beautiful, she loved his enjoyment. Shirley thought it was something else and Richie was laser-focussed. Anton thought it was terrific and he loved it, just needs to work on his line.

What I love about Richie is that he gives it absolutely everything, but the problem with two men dancing together is it’s impossible not to compare them – we had the same with John and Johannes last year. It’s a great performance with loads of energy from Richie, but it lacks precision in the footwork and timing. Enjoyed it very much, though – these two are great fun to watch and Ritchie is a real showman.

This week they’re dancing the Quickstep to ‘Dancin’ Fool’ by Barry Manilow. This arguably belongs in Musicals Week but I’m saving that hill to die on next week. It is, however, a proper shooby-do-wap Quickstep tune – Joe Sugg and Dianne Buswell did a brilliant Blackpool Quickstep to this a few years ago.
Scores: 4,7,5,7 – a total of 23 for Ellie T and Johannes. Did Shirley really give that a lower score than Tony’s Charleston? Really? REALLY?

Anton thought Ellie had a beautiful line, but it needed more atmosphere. Craig thought it was a bit too much walking about and posing, and the best part was the end. By that he means the end sequence, rather than when it finished. Motsi loved the shaping, and Shirley thought it had decent footwork but it lacked the essence of Paso Doble – there was no Spanish feeling.

Well, this is nice from Ellie T and Johannes – I’d definitely take more drive and power through the feet and more Spanish line, but she’s got a lovely frame and this has flickers of attitude. Like Ellie’s hair, I’m a BIG FAN*.

It's Ellie T and Johannes!
This week they’re dancing the Paso Doble to ‘Les Toreadors’ by Georges Bizet. It’s our first Paso of the season, and they going with the ultimate traditional Paso banger. I’m very happy about this, and have every hope that Ellie T is going to serve flamenco queen realness.
There was a glitch in the middle, says Shirley, who clearly wasn’t watching the rest. Anton loved it, Tony absolutely smashed it. Craig thought it was stiff stiff stiff, but Motsi saw improvement.
I mean, Tony can’t even stomp in time, and there’s very little actual Charleston content, but it’s good fun and he looks much happier than he did last week. Disastrous lift at the end, Katya nearly ends up with her neck in a brace. Further proof, if it was needed, that there’s nothing Katya can’t somehow bodge into a dance routine.

This week they’re dancing the Charleston to ‘My Old Man’s A Dustman’ by Foster and Allen. Katya has clearly decided that Tony is never going to survive on dance talent alone, and now needs to be wheeled out for a cor-blimey-guvnor comedy turn each week in the hope of garnering the ‘god loves a trier’ vote. It’s a strategy that’s worked many times before, to be fair.
Scores: 5,7,7,8 – a total of 27 for Helen and Gorka.
Motsi loved the energy in the opening, but she had a tendency to lean back out of hold. Shirley was impressed with Helen’s co-ordination, but she needs to work on her leg action. Anton loved the start, but Helen didn’t maintain it. Craig thought it was technically very poor and Helen’s leg was bent all the way through.
Aside from this ritual slaughter of Lady Gaga, this is a great Cha-Cha from Helen. She has fabulous energy and makes it all look effortless. A couple of the transitions are a bit clunky, but we can just focus on Gorka’s chest instead. Really enjoyed that – think Helen is going to prove herself to be a brilliant all-rounder.

This week they’re dancing the Cha Cha to ‘Rain On Me’ by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande. This was my favourite tune of 2020 – the lockdown anthem we all needed. Very happy to see it join the Strictly playlist.
Last week Helen showed us she can definitely do elegant ballroom, but can she bring some sexy sass to Latin?
Scores: 7,8,7,8 – a total of 30 for Ellie and Nikita.
Craig thought it was good – he wants Ellie to lift up into her chest and focus on her heel leads, but it had lovely expression. Motsi agrees – Ellie’s arms and hands had great extension, and the way Nikita and Ellie dance together is special. Shirley thought there was magic in something so simple, but agrees more work needed on the heel leads. Anton thought it was lovely, Ellie had a beautiful line.
Elly’s dress is gorgeous, and this dance has a lovely romantic feel to it. Ellie’s footwork is lovely, and Nikita is doing a beautiful job of showcasing her natural elegance. Should a Waltz have a floor spin? Not sure that’s allowed, but never mind. Simple, classic, enjoyed that very much.

Tonight they’re dancing the Waltz to ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ by Elvis Presley. Hopefully this will assuage the disquiet of Allison Pearson in The Telegraph, who can’t see it working and is worried that this beloved dance conversation is becoming a ‘woke box-ticking exercise.’
God forbid that Strictly delivers a dance that doesn’t fit the traditional Ballroom/Latin mould. I mean, where might that take us? A hip-hop Paso? A dance that has 20 seconds of profound silence? Couple’s Choice? *clutches pearls*

Anton loved the open work but James needs to dominate Amy through posture. Craig thought it was ploddy and lacked the v-shape, and it also lacked intent and drama, but James has amazing musicality. Motsi felt James was a bit hesitant and he needs more power and push. Shirley saw a glitch in the middle, but it had good atmosphere.
Some postural issues from James – he’s got nice timing, but his frame isn’t locked and this all needs more drive and intent. Just a bit wispy, really – good eyeliner does not a Tango make. Oh, what do I know.

They’re taking the Slot Of Death to dance the Tango to ‘Bad Habits’ by Ed Sheeran. Is there any Sheeran song that hasn’t done a spin on the Strictly dancefloor? Does he write these songs thinking ‘this would make a banging Viennese Waltz’?
Bonus drink if any of the judges reference ‘bad habits’ in their critiques. My money’s on Craig.

Shirley manages to get ‘easy on the eye’ and ‘your little face’ into the first sentence (drink everything) – there were too many mistakes for her. Anton spotted Will missing a step – he has a great groove, but his posture needs to come up. Craig thought Will danced it too heavily and it was a bit jagged, but he has exceptional rhythm and performance. Motsi thought Will’s hips weren’t lying.
I usually love Motsi’s outfits, but that looks like one of those scouring sponges from Lidl.
White trousers are quite unforgiving, aren’t they? I had very high hopes for this Salsa from Will, but actually it’s bit lacklustre, from where I’m sitting. Very little hip action, dodgy transitions and he doesn’t really look like he’s having any fun. Even the shirt rip at the end couldn’t save that, sorry Will.

This week they’re dancing the Salsa to ‘Never Too Much’ by Luther Vandross. This is one of my favourite songs ever, and I can’t find any evidence of it being Strictlified before (fandom, feel free to correct me on this matter). We got a sniff of Will’s hips in his Jive last week, but now it’s time for him to unleash them, Salsa-style. There’s no such thing as too much, Will. Listen to Luther.

Notable outfits include Dianne in a jaunty beret, Tony Adams in a flat cap, and Nadiya in two bits of Christmas wrapping and the crimpers she found within.

Motsi’s traded last week’s picnic blanket for acid yellow, and Shirley’s gone for hot pink power shoulders – it’s like a pack of highlighters down there. Shirley wants the public to vote so she doesn’t have to send anyone home. I don’t think that’s how it works, Shirl?

It’s the return of Heidi’s Hunches!
Even though we’ve only seen them dance once, it’s never too early to start musing on how far they might go in this year’s competition, a feature we* call Heidi’s Hunches. Her are my starters for ten:

Can I just say that I spent AGES agonising over those middle two groups, there’s really not much between them and there will no doubt be much re-shuffling over the coming weeks.
ALTHOUGH I would like to point out that in Week 2 last year I predicted Adam, AJ, John, Rose and Rhys as the final five and, other than Adam Peaty who went out mid-show, I was bang on with the other four. So not ENTIRELY rubbish at this.

It’s another celeb special on The Hit List – I know who Rachel and Marcus are, but who are the other two?
Also I’m now wondering if The Hit List is ALWAYS celebrities, but I’m so rubbish at recognising celebrities that I’ve always assumed they were normals. This changes absolutely nothing.

Strictly's back for Week 2!
Evening all, and welcome back to Week 2 of Strictly Come Dancing! After last week’s double bill of launch show/first live show, we’re settling in to business as usual this weekend. All fifteen couples will dance live tonight, then tomorrow the very first couple will be voted off the Strictly dancefloor. Obviously nobody wants to be the first out, but frankly liveblogs over two hours aren’t sustainable so can we please start the culling, please and thank you.
The sequinned stakes are high tonight - all the judges’ scores from last week will be carried over, which means several of our couples need to deliver something pretty special to stay out tomorrow’s Dance Off. Usual liveblog rules apply – I’ll be up here casting a heavily-beaded eye on proceedings, while you all get stuck into the comment box below. Kick off is at 6.30pm!
