Strictly Come Dancing star Russell Grant suffers 'depressing' health condition with 'no cure'

Russell Grant on Strictly Come Dancing - (BBC)

Former Strictly Come Dancing star Russell Grant has revealed he suffered a bleed behind his eye and now experiences “floating” objects in his vision.

The 73-year-old astrologer, who appeared on the BBC One competition in 2011 with professional dancer Flavia Cacace, has suffered a series of major health setbacks in recent years.

In 2022, Grant had surgery for a brain tumour and had a growth on his pituitary gland removed.

On Thursday, he shared a “depressing” update about his sight after undergoing emergency tests.

“Monday: I woke with strange cottony things floating in my left eye. Headed to the opticians for tests. Next day @BlackpoolHosp called: day after into the eye clinic,” Grant wrote on X.

“Result: I had a bleed behind my eye but no retinal damage but it seems I have to befriend the floater! No cure.”

As fans shared their support, he gave further details about his eye condition.

“It’s not a cataract it’s like a floating cobweb and [his doctor] Mr Malik told me it’s a bleed behind the eye,” he wrote.

“It’s called old age. This Middlesex man is 74 next Wednesday and it’s all part of it x.”

Grant joked that the “floater” in his vision is in the shape of Delaware, adding that he’s “in safe hands”.

“Life is sent to try us,” he replied to one message of support, telling another fan: “Just a nuisance, if not a little depressing but there we go.”

On Friday morning, the TV astrologer revealed how he is dealing with his various health problems.

“Sorting out MRIs for my brain, having scans for my eye with its floating menagerie and waiting for an arthroscopy[keyhole surgery that examines and treats joint damage]!” Grant wrote.

An eye bleed - known medically as subconjunctival hemorrhage - occurs when small blood vessels burst beneath the surface of the eye.

It can be caused by straining during coughing or sneezing for example, eye rubbing or injury. Most eye bleeds look worse than they are and clear up within two weeks.

Grant revealed in March 2023 that he had been diagnosed with a brain tumour.

After having a growth removed, he shared that his diabetes has returned.

“The latest news on my post pituitary brain tumour operation is the possibility I have returned to being diabetic,” the TV personality explained.

"I was once Type 2 but controlled it by diet. However, it’s possible taking so many steroids to keep me going they’ve increased my blood sugar."
