Strictly Come Dancing's Johannes Radebe breaks silence over homophobic backlash

It was a part of the show that grabbed the headlines when it was first announced last year.

Now, for the first time, Strictly Come Dancing star Johannes Radebe has spoken out about being part of the show's first same-sex couple. Speaking to Vernon Kay on ITV's Loose Men today (Thursday, May 12), Johannes explained the type of messages he read on social media, BirminghamLive reports.

He explained: "I had a glimpse. You know what? There is good out there, which is nice to see. But there is also backlash. They said things like 'never come back to Africa'."

Host Vernon then cut across Johannes saying: "You know what though? I bet they never said that to your face."

Johannes replied: "Never! And that's the thing."

The 35-year-old South African native partnered with former Great British Bake Off champion John Whaite on the hit BBC show. The couple made it all the way to the final, losing out to EastEnders star Rose Ayling-Ellis and her partner Giovanni Pernice.

Mike Tindall, a former England rugby player and husband to the Queen's granddaughter Zara, was also on the panel for the new ITV show. He was joined by radio presenter Roman Kemp and fans delighted in the shake-up to the line-up.

On Twitter, Elizabeth said: "It is a refreshing change to see #loosemen # loosewomen ".

Radebe added: "I think Loose Men is a brilliant concept. I'm thrilled we have a platform to sit as men and talk about issues affecting our wellbeing and livelihoods.

"I haven't worked with these gentlemen before, but I'm aware of their brilliant work and I'm delighted to finally meet them. We will continue to bring awareness to mental health as it still plagues our society."

Michael said: "Nice to see #LooseMen on @loosewomen today." Jodie said: "I always enjoy #loosemen so much. Wish they’d do it regularly, maybe every Friday or something #LooseWomen".
