Strictly Come Dancing's Anton Du Beke explains 'budgie smugglers' to pal Giovanni in new series

Fans of Strictly Come Dancing and travel shows were hit with a double whammy of entertainment as Anton Du Beke and Giovanni Pernice took their bromance to the next level on their new programme, Anton and Giovanni’s Adventures in Sicily on BBC One this evening (March 21).

The programme was packed with countless banter between the two, under the premise that Giovanni was taking Anton to visit Sicily, his home island, to show him where he grew up, almost as a thank you to his long-time pal.

"You looked after me when I first came to England, so now I want to say thank you and show you my home", he said in an endearing moment with the two sat outside the Valle dei Templi temple near Sciacca, drinking a cup of tea.

In one hilarious moment as they head in their rented car to one of the island's countless beaches to go for a swim, Giovanni asked Anton if he brought a certain pair of trunks that are very popular on the continent:

"You didn't bring your Speedos with you?", Giovanni asked. "I didn't bring the Speedos", Anton then replied. "Ah because it's the first holiday together, I don't want you to get too keen too soon", Giovanni quipped, to which Anton immediately starts laughing. Unfortunately, the windy road to attempt to translate an idiom rather literally, ends in Anton's mild embarrassment and the nation's acute joy: "How do you say budgie smuggler in Italian?" he then asked, "how do you say budgie, of the bird; 'squawk squawk'?"

After they finally get to the bottom of it, Giovanni said it's called 'piccolo ucello', which means little bird.

"So you say 'piccolo ucello', and then you say smuggler," Anton continued, "the smuggler is somebody who brings something into the country, not through customs.

Giovanni, confused, then replied with: "So why would you call the bird a smuggler? What does it smuggle?"

"No, the bird is not the smuggler. The trunks are the smuggler; they're smuggling the contraband in the, erm, undergarment, and the budgie is the - you're smuggling the budgie into the, er, sea", said Anton, in an increasingly cumbersome explanation.

GIovanni was still clearly nonplussed by this rather amusing English phrase, to which Anton pulls a slight grimace at his lack of progress.

However, the viewers found the interaction hilarious and took to Twitter to showcase their thoughts:

Anton and Giovanni's Adventures in Sicily is on on Tuesdays at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
