Strep A outbreaks confirmed at four South Ayrshire primary schools with 'scarlet fever' letters issued

Outbreaks of Strep A have swept across four South Ayrshire primary schools.

Ayrshire Live can reveal each school that is now dealing with cases of the bacterial infection which is spreading through classrooms.

The list of schools to be hit include two major Ayr schools and the new Prestwick super campus.

Yesterday, health chiefs confirmed they were dealing with cases at a "number of" primary schools in the local authority.

We told how worried parents were being issued with letters telling them of the key symptoms to look out for which include a red rash that can feel like sandpaper.

A letter sent to Ayrshire Live by a concerned Kincaidston Primary parent detailed that Scarlet Fever should be treated with antibiotics and was a 'mild illness'.

The full list of schools to be hit are: Kincaidston Primary, St Ninian's Primary, Girvan Primary and Forehill Primary.

Lynne McNiven, Director of Public Health said: “Our Public Health department has been notified of a small number of cases of scarlet fever within a number of schools in South Ayrshire.

“As a precaution, we have written to parents and carers of children who attend these schools with information about the symptoms, and what to do if they develop symptoms.

“There have been increased number of scarlet fever cases across Scotland in recent weeks and so we are asking parents and guardians to be vigilant of the symptoms and to help stop the spread.”
