Street taped off after woman found lying on pavement 'covered in blood'

A street was taped off by police after a woman was found seriously injured on the pavement after a reported car crash. Officers erected a large cordon on Graythorpe Walk in Salford on Monday afternoon.

The nature of the incident has not been confirmed by police but neighbours claimed the woman had been hit by a car. One resident who was carrying out DIY nearby reported hearing a 'thud' and went to see what had happened.

He told how he was confronted by a woman lying on the pavement and covered in blood. "I just heard this thud, I ran round," he said. "This girl was on the floor covered in blood.

"I thought she was dead at first." He said he was told she had been hit with a car. "Its hit her with some force," he said. She was unresponsive and after a few minutes the ambulance service arrived. Other neighbours had come out of their homes to assist her.

The cordon covered two rows of houses on Graythorpe Walk and also encompassed some grass next to a children's play area. "It's just next to a play area, if there was a four of five year old kid there they would have had no chance," the neighbour added.

The cordon was lifted by police at about 5.30pm. The resident said prior to the incident he saw a black car driving at speed around the residential area.

Neighbours living in the immediate vicinity reported seeing a large emergency services presence, with paramedics and police being scrambled to the scene. Pictures taken in the aftermath of the incident showed the extent of the emergency services response, with two police vans and at least three ambulance vehicles in attendance.

Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment.
