Five fire crews battled a blaze at a multi-storey car park in Pontypridd on Tuesday. The five-storey office block and car park in the town centre on Catherine Street - which houses Trivallis housing association - were been on fire since shortly before 8pm on Tuesday.
A spokeswoman for the fire service confirmed five fire crews are in attendance. Onlookers reported shortly after 9pm that the incident appeared to be worsening. Drone footage shows thick black smoke billowing from the flames on the roof of the building at 8pm. The incident closed Catherine Street while crews tackled the fire.
Alun Lloyd Davies, who lives nearby, said: “It looked bad but it looks to be dying down now. It looks like it’s coming from the air conditioning unit so I’m guessing it could have been an electrical cause of the fire. They closed the main road Catherine Street and Upper Church Street.”
A fire service spokeswoman said: “We had the first call at 7.56pm at Catherine Street in Pontypridd and sent the first two appliances straight away. We now have five fire engines there and we’ve also got a hydraulic platform and water bowser. The fire is on the roof of a five-storey building and the fire is on the roof. It certainly isn’t under control as yet.”
Another onlooker said: “I could see the flames coming out the top of the building and they closed the road off quite quickly.”
