Street food festival, Wimbledon picnic and pop-up Pride to take place at MediaCity this summer

MediaCity is gearing up for a busy summer on its waterside piazza after announcing a series of free summer pop-up events. Running throughout July and August, visitors can expect everything from free yoga classes and special Wimbledon picnics to Pop-Up Pride activities.

Following the launch of Box on the Docks, an outdoor dining concept in partnership with Seven Bro7hers, this past weekend, which offers a rotating programme of independent food and drink vendors, MediaCity have decided to extend the fun with a series of free events for all the family. From tasty authentic gyros to boozy ice cream, they'll be serving up the best pop-ups Salford and Manchester have to offer with an aim to give a platform to emerging and established local brands.

Josie Cahill, MediaCity’s Creative Director said of the summer programme: “There’s a real buzz of excitement as we open MediaCity to another summer season working with local partners to bring independent food and drink pop ups and free events for all to enjoy. We’re thrilled to be partnering with Seven Bro7hers this year for Box on the Docks, as well as bringing a host of events across the summer which build towards We Invented the Weekend, a new festival for MediaCity and Salford Quays and our most ambitious event to date.”

On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 July, Box on the Docks presents Wimbledon Picnics, which will give family and friends the chance to watch the finals on the MediaCity big screen. Tennis fans of all ages can head down to the piazza for free, grab a deckchair or picnic blanket and enjoy a special Wimbledon Picnic box from Beigel.

The following weekend, and ahead of Pride celebrations in August, Pop-Up Pride in support of Proud 2b Parents, an organisation for LGBT+ parents/ carers and their children across Greater Manchester, will also take place. For those interested in attending, you’re encouraged to don your most colourful outfit and enjoy a number of activities, from silent discos and glitter face painting to live DJs and drag queen storytime.

In August, the fun continues with a family weekender on 20-21 August. As well as giant lawn games like Jenga and Connect 4, there’ll also be free entertainment for kids, plus musicians, craft activities and storytelling with Salford Literacy Trail.

Throughout the summer season, visitors can also enjoy a host of further events including free yoga mornings on Sundays on the MediaCity piazza with Carly Tong as well as visits to the Imperial War Museum, The Lowry Theatre and art gallery where plenty of free family focussed events are taking place. Over at Quayside MediaCity, there’s also the I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here Jungle Challenge, and regular Makers Markets.
