Street filled with black smoke after fire rips through building

Thick black smoke covered a street after a fire ripped through a building.

Yesterday evening (May 24) Merseyside Fire and Rescue were called to a fire at Linacre House on Stanley Road, in Bootle. When the crews arrived at the scene at 9.55pm they found that there was a fire on the first floor of the building.

Firefighters entered the building and tackled the fire using a hose reel jet. Two fire engines were at the scene and the fire was extinguished at 10.26pm.

Beth Butterworth who was an eyewitness at the scene said: "Yesterday evening I went to the shop and spotted thick black smoke at the end of my street. At the time I thought nothing of it.

"I kept seeing fire engines going past and decided to go down and there was smoke all along the bottom level and the street was full of flashing lights."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: " Fire crews were called to a fire at Linacre House on Stanley Road, Bootle, on 24 May. Crews were alerted at 21.51 and on the scene at 21.55. Two fire engines attended.

"On arrival, crews found a fire on the first floor of the building. Firefighters entered the building wearing breathing apparatus and tackled the fire using a hose reel jet. The fire was extinguished by 22.26. Crews remained on the scene to dampen down inside the property. Crews left the scene at 23.44."
